It’s time to start “veganizing” our Sisters’ Gourmet cookie mixes! Last week we received this email:

Hi – I see that your cookies require an egg and butter. We are vegan…how do you think your cookies would turn out if we used vegan butter (earth balance soy free) and flax meal egg substitute? Have you ever tried this?

Well I don’t know about vegan butter or flax eggs, and they might be fine. However, I can say that I’ve successfully substituted applesauce for the egg and olive oil for the butter, but not at the same time! And since I love a good challenge, I decided to try it!

I should add that not all of our mixes are vegan to start with, so please check that first if you are strict vegan. The one I used is the Classic Chocolate Chip cookie mix, which doesn’t contain any dairy products. However, the chocolate chips have the disclaimer: may contain milk. It’s not listed as an ingredient, but they are manufactured on shared equipment with milk chocolate chips.

Another note – I used extra virgin olive oil, which seems heavy for cookies and didn’t smell appetizing as dough. I’m not a big fan of “vegetable oil”, but I’m sure any oil can be used. I’d probably recommend something light like avocado oil. That said though, there was no hint of olive oil in the baked cookies.

Here’s how I VEGANIZED our cookies:

  • 1 jar Sisters’ Gourmet Classic Chocolate Chip cookie mix
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • ¼ cup applesauce
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  1. Preheat oven to 375.
  2. Pour entire jar of dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix together. **This will coat the chocolate chips with flour so they will mix into the dough better.
  3. Add olive oil, applesauce, and vanilla and mix well.
  4. Form 1 ½ inch balls and bake for 9-10 minutes.

I’d have to say that not only were they delicious, but not one person that tasted them thought anything was different from our regular butter/eggs cookies! And these were people that eat our Sisters’ Gourmet cookies ALL the time! So, if you don’t have eggs or butter on hand, or you just want to give it a try, or definitely if you are vegan, this is a fantastic option for you!  Enjoy!
